‘Preventing dementia will have a social and medical impact similar to 20th century vaccinations.’

Company background

Homocysteine, dementia and memory loss

Homocysteine is an amino acid from protein in our diet. Deficiency in vitamins B12, B6 or folic acid increases blood homocysteine levels. High homocysteine is associated with several brain disorders including Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, stroke, brain shrinkage and memory loss.

Ageing, oxidative stress and B vitamins

As we age, our bodies are subject to ‘oxidative stress.’ The brain has very little defence against this. An enzyme that breaks down homocysteine is especially vulnerable to oxidative stress; harmful homocysteine levels rise and B vitamins become depleted.

An innovative approach

Cobalz solved this problem by raising levels of an antioxidant called glutathione. Glutathione is not well absorbed, but its levels are increased by N-acetylcysteine (NAC). When given together with vitamins B12, B6 and folic acid, NAC markedly improves symptoms in patients with raised homocysteine and memory problems.
